Matthew 21:1-11 - Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
“I’m not that kind of Messiah. I’m not what you’re expecting. You want to hoist me on your shoulders now, but later in the week you’re going to lift me up on a cross. You think this is a victory parade, but this is my funeral procession. You anointed a live man for burial! I’m a King who rides on a donkey, not on a war horse.”...
...Everything we think about the Messiah--everything about His life, His death--it’s all convoluted, it’s all upside down, it’s inside out, it’s a paradox, it’s a great reversal, it’s not what we expected. I just wonder what kind of a Messiah are you hoping that rides through your house gates? What kind of a Messiah are you hoping rides through your school gates? Through your city gates? Through your work gates? And even through your church gates? Because even in the church we’ve got all these messed up ideas about Messiah—about what He will do and what He will not do.
John 11:1-45 - Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead
"There is no amount of your stink—the stink of your sin—that Jesus won’t come find you. 'Open it up! Let me at ‘em. They may stink, but they’re not above what I’m going to do in their life. Open it up.' . . . Lazarus come out!"
